PLANS to join two sports halls to create an all-purpose complex at a Faversham school have won council backing.

The plans, put forward by the Abbey School, include improvements to the changing rooms and community gym, as well as a viewing gallery overlooking the school's outdoor pitches.

Andrew Heap, head of business development and premises at the school, said: "Our vision is to promote and provide quality opportunities for the pupils of the Abbey School and the community of Faversham.

"At the heart of the vision is a wish to increase the number of people participating in sporting and physical activity and encourage healthier lifestyles."

The plans are due to go before Swale Borough Council in January, but secured the backing of Faversham Town Council on Monday, December 17.

Faversham Town Council's consultant architect John Sell said: "I think the plan is entirely advantageous. It will lead to hugely improved changing facilities and I think it will make a real difference to the use of the sports and pitch facilities, which are open to the community."
